Getting unmarried can sometimes be as expensive, insanely time consuming and detail driven as planning your wedding. When we tie the knot in the first place, we use wedding planners, online worksheets, and various other ‘systems’ to keep us organized and on budget. So, why wouldn’t we do the same for divorce? We’ve compiled a few apps that may make your divorce or domestic partnership dissolution a whole lot more easeful.
Genius Scan: Divorce is documents. Lots of them. Even if you have a completely amicable divorce you still have to exchange financial documents and fill out loads of them. We love Genius Scan because it allows you to take a photo of anything and easily export them as a JPEG and/or PDF. That way, your lawyer, coach, partner, friend (or you) can easily print and serve (deliver) or attach to a document to be filed with the court.
DocuSign, Adobe Sign, Hello Sign: While the legal industry might be way behind when it comes to technology (for the most part), there is good news: Most court’s allow you to e-sign your documents saving time and simplifying the filing process. All three of these guys allow you to easily sign documents with your beautiful esignature.
Drop Box Paper or Google Documents: Want to collaborate on a document – maybe even in realtime? Look no further! No need for Mic Word, emailing back and forth or coordinating who can edit and when. Create, store and edit your documents online – whether it’s a settlement proposal to your ex, an updated budget or a court pleading – Paper and Google Docs are awesome!.
Keeper: I think this might be my favorite on the whole list. Who can possibly manage all the passwords for every app, software or website we visit. It’s too much. Keeper’s app is simple to use – enter in one master password (or use Touch ID) and all of your usernames and passwords are right there – in one place, yay!
Task Rabbit: (Because you can’t do it all) Maybe your house could use a deep clean, you need to pick up your dry cleaning, you’ve got some IKEA bookshelves that need assembling, or your garbage disposal needs to be fixed. Sure you could fix it, but it eats into the ONLY time you have rest after work, kids, dog, separation planning, mediation, checking in on your folks and getting the car serviced. Find an extensively reviewed, background checked tasker in like 5 minutes. Book your desired time/date and pay through the app. Super easy and amazing.
Evernote: Ashamed to admit it but I most often use Evernote at like 2am – when I wake up in a panic because I either forgot to do something, need to do something, want to do something or have an idea for something. Your notes, photos, projects and to-do lists are save-able, searchable and share-able.
Touch Copy, Decipher Tools, Tansee: What did litigants do with out this software? Have text message conversations that need to be transcribed for purposes of obtaining (legal) leverage or to present to the court? We use text messages in our practice for everything from evidence of a spouse who has been harassing her ex, to a parent who refuses to respectfully co-parent with the mother of his children. Sometimes we just need them to prove that a spouse was given ‘notice’ of an intent to do something. Regardless of the reason, this software is really helpful if you need an organized way to present your text messages (don’t expect your telecommunications provider to help – even with a subpoena!)
Clio or My Case: Have you considered hiring lawyer to help you plan, coordinate or litigate your separation? If so, check to see if they offer you an app to help manage everything to do with the legal side of your matter in one place. Apps like Clio and My Case store your pleadings (filed court documents), calendar court dates and meetings, offer you another way to communicate with your lawyer, give you an easy way to pay your bill and let you collaborate with your attorney on various documents. You can also securely store your financial information and documentation. We are hooked!
